One tap tells the developer whether these steps actually work.
Why three steps? Google only lets a test app install for people on its tester list, and the list is the group. Joining shares your Google account's email with the developer, who uses it for nothing but the test — see the privacy policy. Twelve testers for two weeks is what Google asks before the app can go fully public, so every join genuinely counts.
